Dan Harris, an experienced China business attorney, said Beijing’s future use of hostage diplomacy depends on the global reaction to this case: “If the world is silent, I think the risks will go up across the board for all types of China hostage-taking, but especially for smaller countries China doesn’t like.”

Dan Harris is widely recognized as a leading expert on legal issues related to conducting business in emerging markets. Originally from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Dan has also lived in Aix-en-Provence, France, Istanbul, Turkey, and most recently, Madrid, Spain. In his free time, he is dedicated to fitness, enjoys spending quality time with his family, and has a passion for listening to BBC World and Bruce Springsteen. An avid traveler, Dan frequently explores the world, often enhancing his Spanish language skills by visiting our affiliated law firms in Mexico and Spain. He recently walked a large stretch of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago (Frances), and he plans to walk all 500 or so miles soon.
